Once you've settled on a toolkit, audience analysis is underway as social media monitoring and listening is everything you'll need to get reliable results. Audience analysis is the cornerstone of any business strategy. Naturally, the list is not exhaustive and you discover more and more use cases of audience analysis as you go. Depending on the results of your initial audience analysis, you can decide how much further you need to go with researching particular audience groups.

The campaign asked fans to share a photo of their own unique musical style for a chance to win the new bass, with Flea himself picking the winner. The campaign was a massive success because they made a point to understand their audience first.

In the past, gaining an understanding of your audience could only be accomplished by spending a lot of time and money on surveys and market research firms.
In consumer insights, audience analysis refers to researching the interests, preferences, demographic, location, and other aspects of a group.
Branded analysis means looking at the audience for a specific brand Apple, Microsoft, etc while unbranded analysis looks at the audience for the type of product and related topics computers, tablets, technology, etc. For businesses, the best audience analysis gives you deeper understanding of what compels consumers to support a brand or make a purchase.
For example, if a coffee chain wants to attract and retain more customers, knowing the demographics of coffee drinkers in key locations is only the first piece of the puzzle.
Analyzing the specific coffee preferences of that audience and how they have changed over time can give the brand much more actionable insights on how to engage consumers. The deeper, customized analysis could reveal that a trend like a preference for cold brew coffee is spreading rapidly within the target audience.
An insight like this is actionable because it helps brands make informed decisions about updates to improve their menu and advertising. Audience analysis can take many forms. For example, both sentiment analysis and image analysis could be used to gain a deeper understanding of your target audience.
One of the simplest insights to gain about an audience is location. You can identify where people are discussing a brand, product, or any other topic. You can also filter other analysis results by location to better understand an audience in a specific place.
Is the audience mostly male or female? What is the age breakdown for the audience? These questions help you gain some basic knowledge about the audience you are analyzing. Learning what an audience cares about is key to understanding its members.
Understanding your existing audience is the first step to identifying opportunities to expand your audience. For example, Fender know their audience was mostly older males.
This led them to identify the opportunity to reach female guitar players. After assuming that most guitar playing women would be interested in acoustic guitar, an analysis specifically looking at the guitar buying conversation among women showed something different. Many of the women are interested in electric guitars, punk rock, and finding the money to get to make a guitar purchase.Self-centric speakers deliver the speech they want to give, without concern for who is in the target audience or what they may be thinking, feeling, or wanting.
Audience-centric speakers deliver the speech which the audience wants to hear, using words, concepts, stories, and visuals which will resonate with audience members and lead them to action.
But how do you know what the audience wants to hear? How do you know what will resonate with them? How do you know what they are thinking? Audience analysis is the process of learning who your audience is, what they are thinking, and how you can best reach them. If done well, your audience analysis will provide insights that will help you focus your message, select the most effective content and visuals, and tailor your delivery to suit this particular target audience.
Depending on your topic and message, some of the following questions will be relevant and some will not:. Finally, consider how you relate to the audience with respect to several of the characteristics above:. The aim of psychological audience analysis is to discover what your audience may be thinking before and during your presentation.
Psychological analysis covers both the knowledge or lack of knowledge and the beliefs of your audience. In rare circumstances, you are able to meet privately with each audience member before your presentation and learn about them and their expectations.
However, this is rarely practical. So, you are usually required to infer a great deal from your audience analysis instead. You talk to individual people, and no two people in your audience are identical. While the individuals in your audience may be similar in many ways, there will always be a range of characteristics: a range of knowledge levels, a range of beliefs, a range of expectations, etc.

Defining an audience requires the consideration of many factors, such as age, culture and knowledge of the subject. After considering all the known factors, a profile of the intended audience can be created, allowing writers to write in a manner that is understood by the intended audience.
Audience analysis involves gathering and interpreting information about the recipients of oralwrittenor visual communication. There are numerous methods that a technical communicator can use to conduct the analysis.
Because the task of completing an audience analysis can be overwhelming, using a multi-pronged approach to conduct the analysis is recommended by most professionals, often yielding improved accuracy and efficiency. Michael Albers suggests that an analysis use several independent strategies that work together, such as reader knowledge of the topic and reader cognitive comprehension.
Writers can also use conversations, in-depth interviews or focus groups to help them to complete an audience analysis. Conversation as well as other qualitative research techniques will allow the communicator to consider the multiple cultural, disciplinary, and institutional contexts of their target audience, producing a valuable audience analysis. David L. Carson of the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute asserted that technical communicators most often perform their jobs with little or no knowledge about their audience.
Carson states that the analysis should include a reader's level of comprehension of the technical vocabulary and motivation, as well as reading level. Indicators of a reader's high level of motivation include high interest in the subject matter, relatively high knowledge of the content, and high personal stakes in mastering the information.
Another technique used to conduct an audience analysis is the "bottom-up" approach. This particular document focused on the use of contraception and targeted the black youth of South Africa. The initial document was created by document designers in the United States who did not base their design on an extensive audience analysis.
As a result, the document, which used the informal slang of black South African youth, did not effectively communicate with its target audience. After the dissemination of the document, Van der Land used focus groups and interviews of a sample of the target audience to discover what improvements should be made.
Upon considering the audience's perspective, she found that the initial document's use of the hip-style language backfired. The interviewees indicated that the use of the popular language was not effective because it was not used correctly or consistently throughout the document.

Additionally, to the target audience, the informal language did not fit the seriousness of the topic being discussed. The suggested "bottom-up" approach should have incorporated the target audience during the design process instead of as an afterthought. Marjorie Rush Hovde provides even more tactics that can be implemented in the process of an audience analysis in relation to one's organization. She suggests talking with users during phone support calls, interacting with users face-to-face, drawing on the writer's own experiences with the software and documentation, interacting with people within the organization, studying responses sent from users after the documentation is released, and conducting internal user testing.When printing this page, you must include the entire legal notice.
